Reflection

This double degree, Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management/Bachelor of Business, takes four years full-time to complete. At this stage, there is three years to complete. On reflection, for working in human resource management, there is more experience to gain. This experience goes towards not only knowing the ropes, but the maturity required for any position with this line of work that can only come from practice. Communicating with people is fairly easy for anyone truly designed for HR, but dealing with employee terminations, redundancy, etc. will be hard and requires experience in dealing with sensitive issues as these. Experience in the field is crucial, as mentioned in an interview by Jupiters Hotel and Casino Recruitment Advisor Jennifer McDonald, starting with the foundations and working from the bottom up builds integrity and skill. This not only allows for further understanding of people but a stronger emotional intelligence for working in Human Resource Management. Personal growth is important and an ongoing factor of this career, to be hard-working, compassionate and at all times professional, striving towards being the best version of yourself you can be. This in turn reflects well on the company and keeps you on your toes performing at the best of your abilities.

After this insight to the inner workings of this profession, I understand my career plan will be affected. To begin, I will need to invest in some work experience, community service and/or further hospitality practice, possibly through a part-time job. This will aid in laying the foundation for my career, and will need to be done over the next year. Having a job in the hospitality industry, work experience and/or community service will need to be sought after in my second year as my first comes to a close. These basic skills being built upon will hopefully shape the path towards further experience, in my case an internship would be the next building block. Experience through work followed by an internship would display passion and grit for the chosen industry. Effectively, this would be built upon in my fourth year by continuing in expanding my knowledge displaying my determination to work hard for my goals and the business I one day will belong to.

In my spare time it would be wise for me to participate in one or more extra-curricular activities. For example being a part of a sports club, allowing this to speak for itself displaying I can work in a team whilst additionally building on my interpersonal and communication skills. I would also like to engage in my own personal goals and get involved in the surrounding community. Pursuing my own personal goals will enable me to meet new people and open my mind to new experiences and cultures. Being involved in the community will allow for more opportunities, including exploring the surrounding area, expanding my horizons, exposing my mind to more situations both familiar and unfamiliar, introducing myself to more people and most importantly, participating in new experiences. For the rest of my degree I will need to work and practice, to build on my foundations for my career in Human Resource Management.
